“He’s cost them the game” – Shearer slams Tottenham star for Manchester United loss

Old Trafford

Tottenham missed the chance to close the gap on league leaders Manchester City following a 1-nil loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Both teams didn’t do much to create lots of goalscoring chances, with Dele Alli coming close to an opener only to hit Christian Eriksen’s chip pass wide of the mark.

The hosts grabbed a late goal via Anthony Martial to hand Spurs their 2nd loss of the campaign, and Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes Eric Dier is to be blamed for the goal.

The Match of the Day pundit said post-game: “Spurs were all over the place. They’re all out of position. They needed to be five yards inside to mark their men.

“They didn’t smell the danger. Eric Dier has got to cover. He has got to expect the danger. He’s too weak [during the move]. He’s cost them the game.”

Spurs now find themselves 8 points behind City and 3 points behind United, with the loss further adding to their woes after they were knocked out of the League Cup by West Ham 3 days earlier.

The north Londoners will look to avoid a 3rd consecutive defeat across all competitions when they host Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Tottenham can’t afford to make such a defensive error against the La Liga giants, else they miss out on the chance of topping Group H having established a lead after 2 wins and a draw.
