Newcastle could have a new owner by January 2018 as current chairman Mike Ashley is looking to sanction a sale very soon.
Fans and players are looking forward to a takeover, and it’s believed the club will move to the next level once that happens.
Few years ago, Newcastle were seen as the go-to Premier League club for budding players who needed a platform to attract the bigger sides.
The plan worked for the likes of Tottenham’s Moussa Sissoko and Liverpool’s Georginio Wijnaldum, but Crystal Palace duo Yohan Cabaye and Andros Townsend really couldn’t move on to the next level they would have imagined.
Following weekend’s 1-nil victory over the struggling Eagles, Magpies goalkeeper Robert Elliot believes gone are the days when the club was seen as a stepping stone for players.
The 31-year-old told the press post-game: “This club is definitely not a stepping club any more, and it should never be.
“Those days are gone now. The players here are all young, all hungry, but most importantly they are all wanting to play for this club.
“Last year, players left the Premier League to come and play for this club in the Championship, and that shows the size of us and also the fact the manager is here, the age of the players coming in.
“They’re here to develop and get better and take the club forward. We’re now in the top half of the league, and we can keep developing that, not just for this season, but hopefully for more to come.”
Newcastle are currently 2 points away from the Champions League zone following 4 victories and 3 losses in 9 games.
Rafa Benitez’s side have surpassed expectations, and as opposed to being relegation candidates, the Toons are now beginning to look like top 10 favorites.
Should they establish themselves as a constant top half of the table side going forward, Newcastle would have successfully banished the “stepping stone” club notion many have of them.
