Paul Merson says Everton are struggling due to the absence of this player

Football pundit Paul Merson has claimed that Everton are missing veteran midfielder Gareth Barry. Barry left the Toffees during the summer to link up with West Brom in order to boost his chances of getting regular game time.

After spending heavily during the summer on bolstering their side, many expected the Toffees to challenge for a place in the top four this season.

However they are so far underperforming and lie in 16th position on the League standings with eight points from as many games.

They do have quality players within their side but manager Ronald Koeman is currently struggling to get the best out of those players. Merson said: “They spent all that money and they let their best player go – Gareth Barry. They are missing him. They miss Gareth Barry.”

It remains to be seen if Merson will be proven correct. The Toffees could undergo a resurgence and if this happens, Merson will be proven wrong.
