Tottenham played one of their best Champions League games on Tuesday night, as they left the Santiago Bernabeu with a point following a 1-all draw against back-to-back defending champions Real Madrid.
Harry Kane pressured French defender Raphael Varane into deflecting an inviting cross into his own net to give the English visitors the lead, but the La Liga giants struck back few minutes from half-time, as Cristiano Ronaldo converted from the spot.
Spurs £23million summer signing Serge Aurier tripped Madrid midfielder Toni Kroos who was through on goal in the box, leaving the referee with no choice than to award the hosts a penalty.
Both teams came close during both halves to take the lead, but some fine goalkeeping from Keylor Navas and Hugo Lloris at both ends kept out Kane and Karim Benzema.
As a result of the draw, Tottenham top Group H with same points as Madrid – 7, and all eyes will be on the return leg at the Wembley Stadium in 2 weeks’ time.
Some LilyWhites fans believe the north Londoners might have left Spain with all 3 points as Madrid failed to score from open play, and had he not supplied the cross that led to the opener, Aurier would have been in much more trouble on Twitter.
Here are a couple of tweets that sum up the performance of the Ivory Coast international.
Serge Aurier is a talented liability. ?
