West Ham dropped 2 crucial points against Burnley on Saturday, and it could come back to haunt them in the end.
Chances are that the Hammers would have left Turf Moor with all 3 points following a moment of brilliance from goalkeeper Joe Hart.
However, a 2-minute moment of madness at the other end of the pitch almost cost the Londoners after Andy Carroll picked up 2 bookings, and former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore couldn’t be more right when he claimed “he (Carroll) hasn’t developed in the six years since he left St James’ Park. Which is a massive shame given his talent.”
The ex-England international turned pundit wrote in his Mirror column: “When I think of Andy Carroll I think of this cycle: he comes back from injury, scores two or three goals which get us musing about an England call-up, shows some impetuousness, then he gets injured again.
“His sending-off against Burnley on Saturday was just the latest part of the pattern.
“I’d love to see him get his head down and show us what he’s really capable of, because this kid was a one-man wrecking ball at Newcastle”
Carroll has gone from being Liverpool’s £35 million club-record signing, to a £15million West Ham signing.
While 23 goals in 56 appearances for West Ham isn’t a poor return, chances are the 28-year-old would have been able to do much more if he got his head down.
He’s yet to open his account for the new season, and even though he would come up with few moments of greatness, it can be argued that he’s holding the club back.
Enough of waiting for him to get fit, for him to return from suspension, and playing a £16million signing out of position just to indulge him.
