Football pundit Emile Heskey has stated that Liverpool failed to sign Virgil van Dijk during the summer because “took their eye off the ball”.
The Dutch international was a priority target of the Reds and he was desperate to make a move happen, even handing in a transfer request to the Saints.
Transfer negotiations were also complicated by the fact that Liverpool were found guilty of having tapped up van Dijk and had to apologize to Southampton.
Van Dijk would have certainly been a good signing for Jurgen Klopp’s team especially considering that their defence has so far been sloppy this season.
Heskey said: “Van Dijk was the one and we took our eye off the ball. Van Dijk has proven what he can do and he would suit Liverpool no doubt about it, but it shouldn’t have just been him.
“Liverpool should have had a shortlist of options but they appear to have put all of their eggs in one basket.”
