Former Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has claimed that his former side were never contenders for the Premier League title this season and should rather focus on securing Champions League qualification.
Carragher told Sky Sports as reported by Goal: “Liverpool will be looking around the clubs going for top four and how far they are behind those positions. Even at the start of the season I don’t think Liverpool fans expected them to win the title – I certainly didn’t.
“Liverpool will be more interested in Arsenal’s results – maybe Chelsea and Tottenham – although those two probably think they’re capable of catching the two Manchester clubs.”
The Reds started off the season by claiming several points from their opening three games which included a 4-0 mauling of Arsenal.
Things have appeared to have gone downward following their 5-0 demolition at the hands of Manchester City and they have only won one of their last eight matches in all competitions. The Reds did play to a 0-0 draw against Manchester United on Saturday.
For much of the game, they looked to be the more dominant side and had it not been for a spectacular save from David De Gea to deny Joel Matip, they would have prevailed.
