Ecuador vs Argentina Match Preview
Ecuador had a solid run in this CONMEBOL region, currently eighth with 20 points but its World Cup aspirations are already over. Los Amarillos looked like a shoe-in to get a ticket to Russia but have been in horrendous form, losing in five consecutive matches.
La Tri is most recently coming off a 2-1 loss against Chile away from home but should be able to put in a solid effort in this match. Quito has proven to be a complicated place to play for several South American teams and Ecuador could end Lionel Messi’s and Argentina’s World Cup hopes in this match.
Argentina has been one of the most disappointing national teams in the world, currently sixth in the CONMEBOL region with 25 points. Lionel Messi has put in solid performances for his country but the biggest problem for La Albiceleste has been finding a consistent scorer that can link up with Messi. Jorge Sampaoli is currently trying out Boca Juniors’ Dario Benedetto but other players like Mauro Icardi have tried to fill the spot and have failed to perform.
The defense is also a fragile component of the team and this is a very winnable but tough task away from home for Sampaoli’s men. There is the chance that both Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo could miss out on the 2018 FIFA World Cup although both scenarios seem almost impossible to imagine they are a possibility. But at least Argentina should be able to do its job and get the three points from this game to at least assure a fifth-place finish.
