Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar has admitted that he nearly signed for Liverpool.
During his time with Dutch giants Ajax, van der Sar established himself as one of the finest shot-stoppers in the World and helped the club win the Uefa Cup in 1991 and the Champions League in 1995.
In 1999 he came close to joining Liverpool when then manager Gerard Houlier wanted to bring him to Anfield. However the goalkeeper eventually opted against the move and ended up joining Juventus.
After it became clear that Van der sar did not wish to join the Reds, Houlier brought in Sander Westerveld, who is also a Dutchman.
Whilst taking about what happened, van der Sar said, “When I left Ajax in 1999, I travelled to Liverpool and spoke to Houllier. I was shown around Anfield and also met with the chairman and a couple of the players.
“I thought about it, but when Juventus came to the table I came to the conclusion that it would be a bigger challenge to play in Italy.”
