Former Manchester City defender Stuart Pearce has claimed that Liverpool will sign Southampton star Virgil van Dijk.
The 26-year-old van Dijk was a priority target of the Reds during the summer transfer window, however in the end the Saints stood firm on their stance that they would not sell.
After it became apparent that Jurgen Klopp’s team were destined to fail in their aims to sign the Dutch international, they failed to recruit and alternative target.
The Reds have been haphazard in defence thus far this season which has cost them valuable points in both the Premier League as well as the Champions League.
There is a high chance that they will swoop for van Dijk in January and Pearce can certainly see a deal happening.
He said, “I think Klopp has tried to bring Van Dijk in and I think that will happen – if not in January, maybe next summer. That is someone they have earmarked, but for whatever reason, that hasn’t happened this summer.
“Sometimes you go into the transfer market and, for whatever reason, you can’t get what you want. Everyone is vying for the best players and if you can get them, all well and good.”
