West Ham reportedly identify Carvalho replacement in highly-rated Brazilian international

As per Italian football website Calcio Mercato, West Ham have registered interest in Estoril defensive midfielder Matheus Jesus, and are willing to battle Fiorentina, Schalke and Watford for his signature.

The Brazil youth international is currently on a half-season loan with home side Santos from the Portuguese outfit after penning a 5-year deal in June.

However, it’s believed suitors can land Jesus, 20, if the right price is brought to the negotiation table.

La Viola have already had a £3million bid knocked back, and the Hammers will have to offer way more to have a chance.

Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho was West Ham’s top defensive midfield target during the summer transfer, but failed to land the Portuguese and have set eyes on Jesus.

The 6 ft 1 in youngster cut his teeth learning the ropes with Brazil’s Série A side Ponte Preta. His performances last term saw Lisbon show interest, and Europe’s work permit issues saw Estoril loan him out.

Jesus remains unproven at the top level, and while he’s highly rated back home, it remains a gamble for West Ham to trust him.
