Football pundit Stan Collymore has said that Tottenham star Dele Alli deserves the England national team captaincy.
The Three Lions have been without a permanent captain following the international retirement of Wayne Rooney. Since taking over the team, manager Gareth Southgate has not appointed a permanent captain but instead opted to rotate the duties between Harry Kane, Gary Cahill and Jordan Henderson.
Though Alli is a talented player, he lacks the experience and perhaps maturity at this stage of his career to be appointed captain.
The 21-year-old was recently given a one match international ban for making a middle finger gesture towards England team-mate Kyle Walker during the Three Lions recent World Cup qualifier against Slovakia.
He was also given a yellow card during his Spurs 4-0 win over Huddersfield this weekend following a dive which was clearly fake.
Despite all of this, Collymore feels that the youngster deserves the national team captaincy and said, “Let’s forget this idea of passing around the England captaincy and give the armband to Dele Alli now. I know he can be spiteful, he can be antsy and that even his manager Mauricio Pochettino had a little pop the other day.
“But this is the boy who needs making into a man and if Gareth Southgate were to make him captain ahead of the World Cup finals we’d see the boy fly.
“Some of you will say the captaincy would take away some of his flare but that’s utter tosh and I’m sick of players being mollycoddled.”
