Former Arsenal star Ian Wright has blasted Liverpool’s defence after yet another bit of sloppy defending cost the Reds against Newcastle this weekend.
Philippe Coutinho opened the scoring for the Merseyside club with a superb strike, however Joselu managed to draw the Magpies level just a few minutes later after taking advantage of some poor defending by Liverpool.
The defensive issues of the Reds have been clearly documented this season and unless it is rectified soon, it will continue to cost them valuable points as time passes. There is a good chance that they will once again attempt to sign Virgil van Dijk in January in order to bolster their backline.
Wright revealed that he is baffled as to how manager Jurgen Klopp fails to address the issue and said, “Defensively they continue to make such laughable mistakes. It’s as though no one ever thinks, ‘Hang on a minute, what happens if this breaks down and they come at us?’
“Klopp says he could write a book on defending in two hours, and maybe he could. But doing it in theory is a world away from doing it in practice — and Liverpool certainly aren’t.”
