Wilkins explains why Sturridge is not as good as Sanchez

Former Chelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins has acknowledged that Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge is gifted but he added that the striker is not at the level of Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez.

Sturridge endured a frustrating game against Newcastle this weekend as he missed a golden opportunity which could have won the game for his side. Roberto Firmino will remain JurgenKlopp’s first choice striker for now and Sturridge has often found himself being criticized for not working as hard as the Brazilian.

The England international has not been in the best of form and has only scored 10 goals during the past two years, though injuries have hampered his progress.

Wilkins does believe that Sturridge is still one of the most gifted in the game but feels that he needs to work harder to regain the form that saw him score 22 goals from 26 games playing alongside Luis Suarez under Brendan Rodgers.

He said, “I think Daniel Sturridge is one of the most gifted centre forwards that I’ve seen, as far as putting the ball in the back of the net.

“He had a great chance yesterday which he unfortunately fluffed but you have to combine that in the modern day game with a work ethic.

“You only have to look at the people we talk about all the time like Sanchez.  We talk about him all the time. Why? First and foremost he gives you that work ethic.”
