Liverpool reportedly favourites to sign 26-year-old star in January

Liverpool are said to be favorites to sign Dutch defender, Virgil Van Djik, from Southampton once the transfer window reopens in January – according to the Daily Mirror.

Van Djik was very keen on a move to Merseyside by joining Liverpool this summer but the defender failed to earn the transfer despite handing in a transfer request as Southampton were not willing to sell.

As insult to injury, Liverpool not only failed to sign Van Dijk but also had to endure an embarrassing transfer saga due to tapping up accusations and the Reds eventually had to publicly declare the end of their pursuit of the defender.

However, bookmarkers are still tipping Liverpool to sign the elegant Dutch defender and land him during the  upcoming January transfer window.

From Liverpool’s point of view, trying to sign Van Dijk makes perfect sense as the 26-year-old is probably superior to every other defender currently in the Anfield roster.

However, recruiting the ex-Celtic star will be even more challenging this time out as there is believed to be strong competition for the Dutchman, with Manchester United and Chelsea both interested while their relationship with Southampton has not improved much.
