Three things Newcastle must do to beat Liverpool

Newcastle host Liverpool on Sunday in what is expected to be one of the Magpies’ toughest tests since returning to the Premier League.

The Saint James’ Park outfit have won and lost 3 games apiece thus far, and could make a huge statement with victory over the visiting Merseysiders.

Should the North East giants manage to grab all 3 points, It won’t be the easiest of wins, though, and even a draw will be seen as a good result.

However, executing these 3 moves to perfection could see Newcastle come out tops against the Reds.

Play lots of attacking football

Manager Rafa Benitez’s instincts will most likely tell him to sit back, soak up the pressure and hit out on a counter attack against such big side.

However, considering how error-strewn Liverpool’s rearguard is, choosing to constantly attack will be a better option.

Play both Merino and Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey’s red card against Tottenham on the opening weekend saw summer arrival Mikel Merino become a mainstay in the starting XI.

While the Spain youth international has been impressive, same can’t be said of his partner Isaac Hayden.

The former Arsenal man underwhelmed against Brighton, and should make way for Shelvey.

A Merino-Shelvey combo could just prove too lethal for Liverpool.

Start Aleksandar Mitrovic ahead of Joselu

Newcastle clearly lack a top finisher upfront, but in Mitrovic, Benitez has a perfect man for the job against his former employers.

Joselu has had enough time to impress, and has failed.

Having served his suspension, the Serbian striker should be returned to the lineup, and it could prove to be a perfect choice.
