Gerrard reveals why he told Coutinho to stay away from him in training

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has revealed that the reason why he told Philippe Coutinho to stay away from him during training was because the player was so good.

While discussing the 25-year-old, Gerrard said, “He’s impossible to defend against; when I used to train with him I’d hate it when I was on the opposition five-a-side team.

“I wouldn’t go near him and sometimes I told him to keep away from me because he can embarrass you. If he stands you up he can go both ways.

“He’s got such a low centre of gravity, he’s so sharp, so quick and he’s two or three steps ahead of defenders, he’s so, so clever.”

The Brazilian Coutinho is now returning to his best following his transfer saga this summer. He scored a stunning goal on Saturday to help his side to a 3-2 Premier League victory over Leicester.

Liverpool have shown signs of struggle during the early parts of this season and their defensive problems in particular have been clearly shown. Therefore, should they wish to have a good season, Coutinho will have to likely play a starring role.
