Club legend Thompson blasts Liverpool for ‘reckless’ decision

Football pundit Phil Thompson has revealed that Liverpool were reckless when they opted to sell defender Mamadou Sakho during the summer.

After being declared surplus to requirements at the Reds last season following a fallout with manager Jurgen Klopp, Sakho joined Crystal Palace on loan for the second half of last season.

The Frenchman was largely impressive as he helped Palace avoid relegation and the Eagles ended up buying him on a permanent deal this summer for £26 million.

Liverpool failed to recruit their prime defensive target Virgil van Dijk this summer and they did not sign an alternative target to replace Sakho.

They also look to be struggling defensively this season, conceding leaky goals and in lieu of this, Thompson feels that Sakho should have been given a second chance at the club.

He said, “Our best defender at the start of this season has been allowed to leave. Mamadou Sakho was our best defender. He was a warrior, a fighter, a battler – all those things and you saw it at Crystal Palace last season.

“He was like that at Liverpool. I know there’s fallouts in football all the time but somewhere along the line you can’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”
