Former Premier League striker Micky Quinn has claimed that Liverpool could have won the Premier League had they completed the signing of Southampton star Virgil van Dijk.
The Dutch international van Dijk was a priority target for the Reds during the summer and in the end, the Saints refused to sell.
The transfer was also complicated by the fact that Jurgen Klopp’s side were found guilty of having tapped up the player.
The Reds failed to add a quality defender to their side during the summer and their defensive woes have already been clearly shown during the early parts of this season as they have conceded nine goals from just five Premier League games.
Quinn commented on the situation saying, “I think the football has improved no end, they’re a joy to watch and they’re edge of the seat to watch because of the shambles when they’re setting up for set pieces trying to defend.
“To not address a defender in the last transfer window is bordering on negligence. I fancied a title challenge if they got Van Dijk this season, for me that’s out the window the title challenge.”
