Tony Cotton has revealed that former Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard joined the club because it “carried none of the pressure or expectation” than what was found at Manchester United.
Howard joined the Toffees initially on loan in 2006 from United before the deal was made permanent in 2007 and went on to make 414 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring one goal in the process.
The 38-year-old Howard currently plies his trade for American club Colorado Rapids and is still a member of the United States national team. Cotton worked with Howard as his goalkeeping coach at Everton.
The 56-year-old Cotton has now writing about Howard in his new autobiography titled There To Be Shot At in a chapter titled “Tim Coward” and stated, “He went on to become a stalwart for both club and country – largely, I suspect, because playing for both Everton and the United States carried none of the pressure or expectation that comes when you are defending the Stretford End.”
