Former England goalkeeper Nigel Martyn has backed Everton to win a trophy this season and believes that the Merseyside club should prioritize the EFL Cup over a top four finish in the Premier League this season. The Toffees have not won a trophy since 1995 when they claimed the FA Cup.
Martyn said, “I think the Everton fan base would take a trophy over a top-four finish this season.
“The Everton fans would love a Champions League campaign and everything that comes with that as they are a great bunch of supporters, but I think this season they’d take a cup win over that and look to use it as a platform to finish in the Champions League places next season.
“It would be nice for Everton to win a trophy this season to show some progress and Everton certainly have a group of supporters that deserve that.”
22 years is surely a massive amount of time for a trophy drought and many fans of the Toffees will certainly be frustrated by this.
Ronald Koeman did show his intent to transform his side into one that can challenge for trophies by spending heavily during the summer
However, Everton’s new signings have yet to deliver as the club have taken just four points from their opening five Premiership games.
