Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku has insisted that he celebrated after scoring against Everton this weekend for “banter” purposes.
After scoring United’s third goal during their 4-0 thrashing of the Toffees on Sunday, Lukaku cupped his ears and pointed to the travelling fans inside Old Trafford.
Following the game, the 24-year-old Lukaku insisted that what he did was just banter and told Sky Sports, “It’s another goal, really, but I’m happy with the win and staying near the top of the league. It’s just a bit of banter, with the free kick I missed, they booed me. It’s just football.
“Years after years I know I have to stay patient, keep planning and believing the ball will fall my way, keeping the same focus. And luckily it did fall my way.”
This would have certainly angered many fans of the Toffees and the Belgian will now be sure to get a negative reception when he visits Goodison Park during future games.
Lukaku was the Toffees leading goal scorer last season and was a fan favorite among fans of the club. He is likely to now be treated as a villain.
