Everton manager Ronald Koeman has rejected a suggestion put forward by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho that the Toffees should be aiming for a top four finish this season.
The Toffees have started the new season in poor form and their 4-0 defeat against Manchester United on Sunday marked their fourth successive loss.
Ahead of the game this weekend, Mourinho claimed in his program notes that the Merseyside club would be aiming for nothing less than a Champions League place after they spent heavily during the summer.
Koeman however dismissed this during his post-match conference and suggested that fans of his club need to have more realistic expectations.
Whilst speaking about the situation, Koeman said, “I read the programme and my colleague said they are spending £140m and need to go for the top four. Sorry, be realistic. Let’s talk at the end of the season.
“I’m not happy with how we’ve started the season but please, be a little bit realistic about Everton. That starts with everybody, fans, press. We need time, but it’s difficult in football.”
