The most anticipated match during Jornada 9 of the Liga MX will take place with the Xolos Tijuana vs Club America game this Friday, September 15, 2017 (7:00 PM Pacific) at the Estadio Caliente. Both sides have performed well this season, and the winner of this encounter will take hold of 2nd place in the regular standings.
Xolos Tijuana vs Club America 2017 Preview
Xolos of Tijuana are currently one of the hottest teams in Mexico as they are undefeated in five games and have earned four consecutive victories. The team coached by Eduardo ‘Chacho’ Coudet had a disastrous start to the Apertura 2017 in which they lost their first three games without scoring a single goal.
Tijuana’s situation is much more positive today as the border team sits in 3rd place with 13 points after 4 wins, 1 tie, and 3 losses. One of the reasons Xolos has performed so well as of late is due to the coach’s use of the 5-3-1-1 formation as opposed to a 4-4-2.
This new formation has allowed the defense to only allow three goals in the last five games, and for striker Gustavo Bou to score 5 goals in those matches. Lastly, it will be interesting to note who will start along Bou as Juan Manuel Iturbe is still adapting to the team, star signing Miller Bolaños who hasn’t made his debut, or Luis ‘Quick’ Mendoza who has been very efficient when given time to play.
Friday’s match will mark the return of coach Miguel ‘Piojo’ Herrera to Tijuana where he led Xolos to consecutive 1st places in the regular standings. Tijuana fans have a love-hate relationship with the passionate coach as they love that he was successful with the team, yet they hate that he had a contract with the disliked Club America even before the season had ended.
Nonetheless, Piojo will face a difficult opponent who is much different than the team he left just months ago. The ‘aguilas’ have done very well this season as they sit in 2nd place with 16 points; 4 behind the leader Monterrey.
