Rivals move to tie down Rangers’ £300,000 summer target

As per The Press and Journal, Aberdeen have opened negotiations with highly-rated midfielder Kenny McLean, in order to get the Rangers target to stay with the Dons beyond the end of the season.

The 25-year-old was the subject of a £300,000 bid from the Ibrox outfit back in June, but Aberdeen didn’t hesitate to knock their offer back.

McLean is currently running down the final year on his deal, and will be free to enter into talks and sign a pre-contract agreement with another club in January.

Manager Derek McInnes wants to hold on to his man for the foreseeable future as they look to defend their 2nd place finish of last term.

He told the press ahead of the Dons clash against Kilmarnock: “We have spoken to Kenny and Anthony, who are out of contract as well as one or two of the younger ones.

“These things can take a bit longer but we are in discussions. I’m sure we will try to find a way to make both happen if possible. If we can’t then we will deal with it and move on.”

McInnes’ admission that losing McLean is possible comes after Aberdeen saw the quartet of Ryan Jack, Niall McGinn, Peter Pawlett and Ash Taylor leave Pittodrie as free agents at the end of last season.

Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha is attracting the big names in the division with his exciting project, and landing the Scotland international midfielder is very much possible.

Should McLean become a Gers player, he definitely will be adding a lot to a midfield that could do with more quality hands going forward.
