3 first-half goals from Serie A perennial mid-table side Atalanta ensured Everton’s European campaign kicked off on the most embarrassing of notes.
Although, the Italian hosts were back in Europe for the first time since 1991, they looked nothing like it as they dominated the Toffees in a way an experience club on continental level would.
Goals from Andrea Masiello, Alejandro Gomez and Bryan Cristante ensured Everton finished bottom of the Europa League Group E after the first round of fixtures.
Summer arrivals Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney both came to close to putting the Merseysiders ahead in the opening minutes of the encounter, but it only marked the beginning of their troubles in front of goal at Italy.
Now winless in 5 games ahead of Sunday’s visit to Old Trafford, Everton continued their poor away form against Serie A opponents, as they have now lost all four of their away games in Italy without scoring a single goal.
Ahead of hosting Cypriot outfit Apollon Limassol in a fortnight, the Toffees, who have now failed to score in their past three competitive fixtures, face a tough task to repeat their record of having always escaped the competition’s round-robin stage.
Fans on social media weren’t pleased with them a bit, and below are some of their disappointments expressed in tweets.
