Liverpool legend slams Arsene Wenger for ruining his own legacy

Former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann has said that Arsene Wenger has destroyed the legacy that he built at Arsenal over the last 20 years by choosing to remain at the club during the past four years.

Wenger has been largely criticized during recent years for opting to remain at the helm of the Gunners while the teams performances appear to be declining. Last season saw the hash tag #Wengerout trend on social media which called for Wenger to be sacked.

Last term also marked the first time that the Gunners finished below their North London rivals Tottenham in the Premiership standings and also the first time that they finished below the Champions League qualification places.

The French manager was however presented with a new two year contract at the end of last season after he managed to guide the Gunners to an FA Cup triumph.

Whilst speaking to German website Sports Buzzer, Hamann was very critical of Wenger and said, “Arsenal have been in a downward spiral for the past couple of years. In spite of excellent individuals, there is no longer a team on the pitch.

“You can lose games, but you simply can not concede ten goals – even against Bayern in the Champions League. Things aren’t working for them left, right and centre. Wenger has decided to hand himself a new deal. He’s all-powerful but in three or four years he has destroyed everything he had built in the 20 years before.”
