Celtic kicked off their Champions League campaign with a 5-0 loss at the hands of PSG on Tuesday night at Parkhead, but it appears a lot of bettors believe the Scottish giants can upset the odds and win the Champions League this season.
According to Oddcheckers.com (via Scotsman), the Hoops are the 6th most backed team to win the European prize, as they have accounted for 5.5% of total bets since the market opened, beating the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus and Chelsea when it comes to landing this season’s Champions League outright.
Meanwhile, Celtic’s Tuesday’s opponent and fellow group B team PSG, have attracted the highest number of bets to win the competition, with 17% of the market share theirs.
While Celtic realistically don’t have a chance of winning the Champions League, as their probability of making it to the round of 16 is even low, punters appeared to have been tempted by the lengthy odds available.
This is because some bookmakers have even gone as far as offering a 750/1 odds on the Parkhead outfit to lift the trophy in Kiev next May.
The last and only time Celtic won the continental prize was half a century ago, when it was still being called the European Cup, and it would take a lot of quality 5-star football and squad if they are to have any chance of making history all over again anytime soon.
