Liverpool legend explains why attacker was right to leave Arsenal

Liverpool legend Graeme Souness believes that Alex Oxalde-Chamberlain was right in his decision to leave Arsenal and join Liverpool.

Oxlade-Chamberlain initially struggled to earn regular game time with the Gunners; however Arsene Wenger played him as a wing-back in order to give him more opportunities. This eventually however led to the player deciding to leave the Emirates.

Although Chelsea were rumored to also be interested in signing him, Oxlade-Chamberlain eventually choose Jurgen Klopp’s side as he feels that they will offer him a good chance to play in his preferred role which is in central-midfield.

Arsenal had no choice but to sell as the 24-year-old had just a year remaining on his contract and decided against an extension.

Souness has now stated his belief that the player did the right thing by writing in the Sunday Times, “Today, £30-40m is buying you a good player, but not a top man. The initial £35m that Liverpool have paid for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is a very high figure for a player coming to the end of his contract at Arsenal.

“Oxlade-Chamberlain chose Liverpool rather than Chelsea because he did not want to be a wing-back. He sees himself dropping the shoulder and going past people in the central midfield area. I don’t see him as a wing-back either. He is the wrong shape for it.”
