West Ham co-chairperson David Sullivan has revealed that the East London club turned down the chance to sign Renato Sanches and Grzegorz Krychowiak after they failed to sign William Carvalho.
After failing to establish himself at Bayern Munich last season, Sanches ended up joining Swansea on loan whiel Krychowiak moved to West Brom on loan from PSG.
The Hammers were looking to bolster their midfield and it was no secret that they were chasing Carvalho, for whom they were willing to pay £33 million.
Now speaking about the chance to sign alternatives in Sanches and Krychowiak, David Sullivan said, “Overall Slaven is happy with the business we have done during the summer transfer window. We received the manager’s wish-list before the window opened and we have managed to get the top four players on it.
“It is no secret that we made a club record bid for Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho but unfortunately that offer was rejected a couple of weeks ago. Grzegorz Krychowiak and Renato Sanches were both offered to the manager before their switches elsewhere, but he told us that he is happy with the squad he has.”
Many Hammers fans will certainly be frustrated that the club did not sign Sanches as he is arguably one of the best young prospects in Europe after playing a big role in helping Portugal win Euro 2016.
Sullivan however feels that it was a good transfer window for his side as they managed to sign seasoned professionals such as Joe Hart, Marko Arnautovic, Javier Hernandez and Pablo Zabaleta.
