This Thursday, August 31 Ravel Morrison was officially announced as Atlas’ newest acquisition. The move is a very exciting and ambitious move for Los Zorros and is one that can greatly benefit the team and the Liga MX in general.
Along with being exciting and ambitious, the signing of the English midfielder is also a tremendous risk for the club. Morrison has the talent to succeed at the top level in world football but has been plagued with attitude problems and off the field issues in the past.
Atlas needs someone that can make the difference in that injury-plagued midfield and Morrison can be the answer. The transfer for the 24-year-old was a one-year loan deal from Italian Serie A team, Lazio. While the move is just a loan, Atlas’ vice president Alberto de la Torre has indicated that Morrison will be sent back to Europe if he does not perform.
De la Torre had a news conference last Thursday where he mentioned the motives for the signing and that Morrison “is warned”. De la Torre said, “If he does not work, he has to go home, like everyone else”. It is unclear how the Manchester United product will adjust to the Liga MX but Alberto de la Torre does not expect immediate results from the Englishman.
“There are no magic wands, there are no players that get here and triumph from the first day”, de la Torre said. The words from the Atlas’ vice president suggest that the club is aware of the risks involved with the transfer but also recognizes the massive potential that the player can bring along.
