Gareth Southgate makes major decision on England captaincy

According to reports, England manager Gareth Southgate does not wish to appoint a permanent captain for the Three Lions following the international retirement of Wayne Rooney. Rooney surprisingly called time on his international career recently.

Following this there was speculation suggesting that Southgate could be set to appoint a new permanent captain and the names of Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson were thrown into the mix.

After Rooney was dropped last season due to not playing regularly with Manchester United, Southgate passed the captaincy around and it looks like he will do the same for the near future.

Whilst commenting on the situation, he said, “I’m keen to keep sharing the leadership. I think we’ve focused too much on Wayne in particular in the past few years.

“We’ve got to start building a more resilient group of leaders and start allowing people to take more responsibility. So for me, it’s not the most important decision, the most important thing is trying to build the group.”
