According to French news outlet RMC Sport, Everton are keen on hijacking Zenit St. Petersburg’s move for Valencia centre-back Aymen Abdennour, despite the fact that the former Toffees target had already passed a medical with the Russian heavyweights.
Marseille have also been linked with a late move for the 28-year-old, while West Ham are also keen.
The Tunisia international and ex-Monaco also attracted Watford, Leicester City and Southampton earlier in the summer, with his no-nonsense style of defending attracting suitors.
Everton want one more defender before wrapping up their summer transfer business, and if Abdennour is still available in the coming hours, they are likely to make a swoop.
Reportedly, Chelsea made a last-ditch attempt to sign the 2-time CAF Team of the Year player last summer having missed out on a number of defensive targets, only to go for David Luiz in the end.
Although, Everton have leaked just 3 EPL goals this season, they can still add more steel to their defence as they contest on 4 fronts and attempt to go one better.
In Abdennour, the Blues would be adding quality to their rearguard should they beat a host of suitors to his signature.
