Match Preview

Atlas has been in the spotlight recently with the surprising signing of English midfielder Ravel Morrison. Los Rojinegros have several key absences within the squad like Rafael Marquez, Clifford Aboagye and Leiton Jimenez that may have forced the surprising acquisition. The team from Guadalajara has not won a game in its last five games in the Liga MX but has won its two games in the Copa MX, including a 1-0 win against Club America at the Estadio Azteca.

Some key players like Fidel Martinez, Facundo Erpen and Luis Robles have featured in these two games but some of the more intriguing players to watch will be some unproven Liga MX players like Uvaldo Luna and Patrick Soko. The Mexican-born Luna is coming over from Colombia to try and keep the success he had with Patriotas de Boyaca while the Cameroonian-born Soko is coming over from the Dominican Republic. This could potentially be a challenging task for Los Zorros even playing away from home but it will be interesting to see how the team performs coming into the game in poor form.

Club America has been one of the better teams in the Liga MX, currently in second place with 13 points. In the Copa MX, the Mexico City team is also enjoying success with six points. A win or a draw will almost guarantee a spot in the knockout stage for Las Aguilas but will not guarantee leadership of Group 3 as Atlas still has another game to play in the Copa MX. Miguel Herrera has used several key players in this Copa MX campaign like Pablo and Paul Aguilar and Silvio Romero.

“El Piojo” is likely to present a strong lineup in this game with no Liga MX action this weekend due to the international break. Club America did fall 1-0 the first time these two teams met in this competition but got revenge in the Liga MX with a 1-0 win away from home in week 4. This game should be a contested encounter and there is no clear winner heading into the game.
