Former England manager Steve McLaren has revealed that he would not be surprised if Wayne Rooney ends up playing for the Three Lions at the World Cup next summer.

The 31-year-old Rooney announced his retirement from international football this week. It was rumored that he was in line to earn himself a recall to the national side by Gareth Southgate as a result of his improved performances recently.

Southgate has however reiterated that the door is always open for the England national team and Manchester United all-time record goal scorer to return.

Despite all that has happened, McLaren has revealed that he would not be surprised if Rooney does end up playing at the World Cup and said, “Stranger things have happened in football. I think we should watch this space regarding his England future.

“If he gets his form back at Everton, scoring regularly, then selection might come again. It would not surprise me if he gets the call before the next World Cup and decides to come back.”
