Liverpool manager explains the situation surrounding Mignolet

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has insisted that Simon Mignolet remains his club’s first choice goalkeeper despite Loris Karius starting during his side’s 4-0 demolition of Arsenal this weekend.

The Belgian international Mignolet was reportedly unhappy to have been dropped though he is expected to return in goals for his club when the take on Manchester City on September 9.

Many had speculated that Mignolet may be demoted to second choice though it has now become clear that Klopp did this to rest his first choice, who will retain his position in the coming games.

Whilst addressing the issue, the German Klopp said, “Intensity for a goalkeeper is different. It is not physical. It is mental. We said before the season we wanted to have three really strong ones.

“Simon is a clear number one. He won the race in pre-season. You can always rely on him. He is solid – a machine; 100 per cent he plays against City.”
