A surprise summer arrival at Goodison Park might just be on the cards with Everton manager Ronald Koeman refusing to rule out a loan swoop for unwanted Chelsea striker Diego Costa in the next few days.
The 28-year-old has since fallen out of favour with the Blues’ Italian manager Antonio Conte, and with his desired move back to Atletico Madrid pending due to the club’s transfer ban, a temporary stint elsewhere looks certain.
Especially considering that he now risks missing out on next year’s World Cup having been excluded from Spain’s squad for next month’s qualifiers.
Quizzed once more on the club’s chances of landing the controversial Brazil-born Costa during Friday’s press conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, Koeman stressed, “I’ve always said there is a warm welcome here for every good player, and he is a good player.”
The Dutchman wants another striker before the window closes, and a decision would likely be reached with the board on Sunday as per which forward would be pursued in the last 3 to 4 days of the transfer market.
Getting Costa on loan and pulling off such a great move for the prolific targetman would no doubt put a whopping big cherry on the top of the Toffees’ transfer cake.
Were he to be snapped up, his rugged, crude, yet effective ways of getting the job done in the final third could help put Everton in a top position on a table ahead of January.
