West Ham fans encouraged despite Southampton defeat

West Ham United were consigned to their second successive defeat of the new season after losing 3-2 to Southampton on Saturday.

The Hammers nearly claimed a point from the game but ended up falling at the last hurdle as Charlie Austin converted from the penalty spot during second half stoppage time to seal the three points for the Saints.

Manolo Gabbiadini opened the scoring for the Saints before Dusan Tadic doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

The Hammers showed fighting spirit to draw equal through a brace from Javier Hernandez but they still ended up losing.

For the Hammers, the match also marked Michail Antonio’s first start since suffering an injury setback last season.  The winger was out of action for the last six weeks and spent the summer break undergoing rehabilitation.

Despite Hammers fans being disappointed with the result, many were impressed to see Antonio back in action.

Andrew Whitmore wrote on Twitter, “Another poor performance. Hernandez & Antonio played there part but this needs to be sorted & quick.. #SOUWHU #COYI”, while Chris Brown said, “Lots of positives, Hernandez off the mark, Antonio looked good and was very spirited fighting back with 10 men. #COYI”
