Newcastle are being tipped by a handful of pundits and bookmakers to be involved in another relegation scrap this season, and if there is a blueprint on how not to escape the drop, the Toons are following it to the letter.
Manager Rafa Benitez was rest assured by club owner Mike Ashley back in May that he would be given full financial backing in the transfer market, convincing the Spaniard to stay.
However, the Billionaire businessman has since changed his tune, forcing Benitez to declare ahead of Sunday’s clash with Huddersfield Town, “He knows what he told me and what I was thinking. We know where we are and what we want.
“We have to carry on with our normal business but the window is like this, the market is like this, we have to stay calm and try to do our job.”
Newcastle have already lost 3 points of a possible 40 needed to escape the drop having lost their season opener to Tottenham at St. James’ Park last weekend.
5 major first-team signings have been made so far, but Benitez still wants at least one goalie and winger.
At the moment, Ashley isn’t ready to release much-needed funds, and while he has admitted he is open to selling the club, it doesn’t look likely that a right buyer will emerge before the window closes.
The lack of necessary major signings would hurt Newcastle’s chances of retaining their topflight status at the end of the season, and to make matters even worse, the man putting them into the imminent struggle may no longer be around when that happens.
