Southampton are expected to sell Van Dijk to raise funds for transfers despite investments from new Chinese owners, according to Sky Sports.
New majority stakeholder, Gao Jisheng recently acquired an 80% stake in the club after paying £210 million but has informed Southampton boss Mauricio Pellegrino that he will have to sell players in order to raise funds for any transfers.
Having already submitted a transfer request, Virgil Van Dijk will be one of few players who are expected to leave the St Mary’s Stadium this summer.
The Dutch national was spotted in London earlier this week amid reports suggesting Chelsea had bid £60 million for the 26-year-old center back.
Liverpool have also been interested in bringing Van Dijk to Anfield throughout the summer despite being reported to the FA by Southampton over ‘illegal approaches’ made for the defender.
The Reds have had a poor defensive start to the Premier League campaign and will be looking to strengthen the back four before the transfer deadline.
