Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez has informed his star player Jonjo Shelvey that he will need to get on top of his anger issues if he wishes to reach his full potential as a player.
Shelvy earned himself a red card during the Magpies opening match of the Premier League season against Tottenham last weekend following a reckless stamp on Dele Alli. He is set to now be out of action until September.
Shelvey has long had issues with anger and received a five match ban last season after being found to have racially abused Romain Saiss of Wolves.
Benitez said of Shelvey’s situation, “He knows he made a mistake and everyone agrees with that. He is the first one that wants to change, wants to improve. We have been working on that and so is he.
“You cannot predict or prevent it, we are working on that. The situation is not what you are expecting, so you have to keep going to give the right message. At the end it depends on one second when he loses control. He knows. It depends on him and those around him.”
