Gylfi Sigurdsson wanted Everton move at the end of the season says Clement

Swansea boss Paul Clement has revealed that new Everton recruit Gylfi Sigurdsson had informed the Swans that he wished to leave the club at the end of last season.

Sigurdsson completed a club record £45 million transfer from the Welsh outfit to the Toffees on Wednesday.

Clement has now confirmed that the player informed him of his intentions to leave at the end of last season and said, “I made it clear to Gylfi at the end of last season and conversations I had via texts with him over the summer that I would like him to stay.

“His view was that he would like the opportunity to potentially embark on another challenge. I was aware of that from the end of last season. The conversations were open and frank, but you still hope there might be a change of mind.

The Iceland international Sigurdsson was arguably Swansea’s best player last term as he played a key role in helping the club to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

At the age of 27, he is at peak and now will perhaps be the best time for him to be playing European football so it is certainly undertstable that he wished to find a new club.
