Sunderland teenager Josh Maja has undergone surgery and is set to be out of action for up to a month.
The 18-year-old Maja has been on the sidelines since he limped off during the Black Cats pre-season friendly against Bradford City last month.
Sunderland manager Simon Grayson said on Monday that the teenager will be seeing a specialist as his injury is not healing as expected. He added that he hoped that the player would not require surgery.
Following the Black Cats 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday on Wednesday, Grayson confirmed that Maja will require surgery and said, “He has had an operation on his knee on Tuesday morning.
“He will probably be out for a month, they just found a bit of a problem with his knee and we had to operate.”
Maja played well during pre-season, scoring four times from six games. He deserves first team opportunities once he returns to the first team fold.
