Borussia Dortmund star Nuri Sahin has spoken out about why he was unsuccessful at Liverpool and how Jurgen Klopp reacted when he asked to leave Dortmund to join Real Madrid.
Sahin worked with Klopp at Dortmund and helped the club win the German Bundesliga in 2011.
The performances of the Turkish international Sahin during that season attracted interest from Real Madrid. It now appears that when interest from the Spanish giants emerged, Klopp gave the player a choice of whether he would like to stay for leave.
Whilst speaking about how Klopp reacted to the interest, Sahin said, “After we won the Bundesliga in 2011, I got a text from my agent: ‘Hey Nuri, Real Madrid wants you’
“There was a part of me that wanted to say no. Dortmund had given me so much – how could I leave them? It was hard to think about. I lost sleep.
“I talked for hours with my wife and family. But I had to speak with Dortmund’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, before I could decide. I will remember our conversation forever.
“’Nuri, it is your choice,’ he told me. But if you leave, you must know, I will always be on your side. You are my friend forever.”
