Giants reportedly set to place formal bid for Liverpool target

According to reports, Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is preparing to make a formal approach for Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk this week.

The Dutch international van Dijk has been linked with a move to the Reds all summer though negotiations were complicated after Liverpool had to formally apologize to the Saints after being found guilty of tapping up the player.

Van Dijk wants to leave the Saints and has handed in a transfer request which means that the chances of him departing the St. Mary’s before the end of the transfer window is high.

Chelsea may be especially keen to take action and try and sign the player following their shock 3-2 defeat against Burnley this weekend, during which their defence was less than impressive.

Southampton have revealed that they have yet to receive any formal offers for the player. However, once Chelsea submit a bid, Liverpool are bound to also take action and a bidding war could take place.
