After a season away from the Premier League, Rafa Benitez has led Newcastle back to the big time with a Championship title. Here is how the best line up they can put out for their very tough opening day fixture at home to Tottenham.
Formation: 4-4-1-1
Goalkeeper – Rob Elliot
Elliot should be the man to turn to here by default just about. Tim Krul doesn’t look to be in the manager’s plans, while Karl Darlow looks to be set to move on elsewhere.
Defenders: Manquillo, Lejeune, Clark, Dummett
At the right back spot, the nod should go to Manquillo against Spurs. The Spaniard is a solid in defence and doesn’t stray too far, so he looks a good option.
After an impressive preseason, Lejeune should have just pushed his way into the team. His play at Eibar was very good, and his possession play could help them out a great deal. Clark and Dummett remain after last season and have done little to suggest being pushed aside.
Midfielders: Shelvey, Hayden, Ritchie, Atsu
Jonjo Shelvey is the team’s focal point at the moment and had a brilliant preseason. He and Hayden had a good partnership last term, and it will serve them well. With Jacob Murphy still working his way into the team, look for Matt Ritchie and Christian Atsu to get a chance to claim a spot in the team on the wing.
Forwards: Perez, Gayle
Picking Ayoze Perez is a no-brainer here. He did decently in the Championship, but he’s likely to pick up matters in the Premier League as it will surely suit him better.
Dwight Gayle is “OK” according to his manager, but he is expected to play. He’s certainly the best striker they currently have, so they have little choice but to go to him if healthy.
