Alarming times on Tyneside for Newcastle United boss Rafa Benitez

Transfer disagreements. Players not being signed. Frustrations with stars being sold and/or injured. That’s how things appear to be going at Newcastle right now for Rafa Benitez.

But that’s not what I’m referring to. I’m referring to his tenure at Liverpool. At Anfield, Benitez mastered a solid side to a Champions League title but was frustrated toward the end of his time in 2010.

After a strong season in 2008/09 in which they finished four points off the top, it was hoped they would push for a title. But Benitez was left exasperated at the kind of help they received.

Xabi Alonso left the club, and along with him, an important player in how the team played. He wasn’t exactly replaced, meaning Steven Gerrard wasn’t as free as he previously was.

But the turmoil was the biggest factor. Benitez did not get on well with the owners at the time, and at the end of the day his disagreements with them led to his dismissal more than anything. This time around at Newcastle, things are worryingly looking the same sort of way.

Benitez has yet to have much activity in the current window, and the side clearly will need it to make the step up. Their stuttering campaign in the Championship last term did end with a title, but they were far from convincing and need help to make a successful transition in to the Premier League.

The most alarming thing is that this story has happened before with Benitez when it comes to not getting the players he wants or needs. The Spaniard, though, this time is the man in control. Newcastle need Benitez more than he needs them. He loves football, but he could walk away. Can Newcastle really afford that at this juncture?

To whom could they turn that could do better? That’s the question that no one can answer. Because there is no correct answer.
