This Tuesday, August 8, 2017 (11:45 AM Pacific) Sheffield Wednesday will host Chesterfield at the Hillsborough Stadium for a match in the first round of the EFL Cup. Wednesday was one of the best teams in the Championship last season, while Chesterfield relegated from the League One to the League Two, this match should be interesting but should not be a close encounter.
Sheffield Wednesday finished fourth in the Championship last season but had their Premier League dreams crushed by Huddersfield in the playoffs. The Owls will look to compete for a place in the EPL this season again with the key signing of George Boyd from Burnley.
The strong Scottish core of the team with players like Barry Bannan, Steven Fletcher and Jordan Rhodes should make Wednesday a very competitive team in the Championship. Carlos Carvalhal’s team is coming off a disappointing 1-0 loss against Preston in the first week of the Championship but should be able to win this game.
Chesterfield was relegated from the League One to the League Two last season and does not look close to returning to the League One anytime soon.
The Spireites lost their first game in the League Two this season, 3-1 against Grimsby Town and do not look like they will have a chance in this EFL Cup game. The match should be a hard-fought encounter, even with the difference in quality between the two teams that will be playing each other.
