Has Everton’s desired utility man been right there in the squad all along?

Right from his Southampton days, Everton manager Ronald Koeman has often spoken of his affection for utility players.

Reportedly, he’s close to landing one in Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson. However, one has been with him all-along since he managed his first game at Goodison Park.

As per Liverpool Echo, England youth international Tom Davies has declared his availability to serve as a multi-functional player if need be.

The 19-year-old surprisingly featured at right wing-back against Ruzomberok in the Europa League last week, but he’s not exactly new to the role.

Back in May in a Premier League match, Davies featured briefly at right-back against Watford in a game he started out in midfield.

Following the end of Everton’s pre-season, the midfielder claimed he is open to the idea of featuring in different positions. He enthused, “It can’t do me any harm if I can play in different positions. Playing wing-back was different to playing in midfield, it was tough in midweek and it was another test being back in the middle (against Sevilla).

“Wherever I’m asked to play, I’m happy to do the job. I enjoy playing in midfield mainly but, of course, I’m happy to play at full-back if I’m asked – it’s just a privilege to be on the pitch playing for Everton. Anywhere the manager wants me to play, I’ll do it.”

The youngster faces tough competition for playing time in either role next term, but he can always be expected to put in his best wherever and whenever he’s called into action.

Davies could turn out to become a very reliable option both in midfield and full-back roles as a permanent first-teamer in the nearest future.
