Everton to reportedly battle Southampton for 23-year-old defender

According to reports, Everton have joined Southampton in the race to sign Wesley Hoedt in a £12million deal.

Toffees manager Ronald Koeman is looking for defensive cover ahead of next season given that Ramiro Funes Mori is expected to miss the majority of the upcoming season through injury.

The 23-year-old Hoedt was impressive for Lazio last season and his performances earned him a debut for the Netherlands national team recently.  During his time in Italy, he has averaged five tackles per game and managed to net three goals last term.

Southampton are also eyeing the defender as a replacement for Virgil van Dijk, who is being strongly linked with a move to Liverpool with the player also said to be keen on moving to Anfield.

Reports have also claimed that the Saints have submitted a £12 million bid for Hoedt and he looks likely to leave Italy this summer.
